A while back a company in the States sent me “the be all and end all” in skin care products.
Well it would want to be at the price. Wow, this must be good. It feels good just putting it on – 0 for 10g! Anyways it seemed ok but surprisingly for a 70’s man, I know quite a bit about skin care.
When you’re born in North Queensland and have surfed nearly everyday since I was 4, I’d have looked like Keith Richards’ Dad if I hadn’t wised up.
Firstly, the number one biggest mistake in skin care is the obsession with external care over internal care. The outer layers of your skin are dead. Skin is renewed from the inside out and my 7 secret ingredients for great skin within are;
1. Water - Hydrating the skin is of the utmost importance so try and drink between 1-2 litres of water per day.
2. Essential Fatty Acids – My personal favourite is fish oil but other great sources include flaxseed, nuts, seeds, eggs, fish. For more information, read my article on fats.
3. Zinc – A wonder nutrient. Tissue regeneration, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, vitamin A-binding, protein formation. Try half a dozen oysters every other day or if you must supplement, zinc citrate 40 mg daily.
4. Selenium - Prevents free radical damage to cell membranes. Brazil nuts are a great source.
5. Bioflavonoids - Any colourful fruits and berries. Antioxidant and crucial for capillary strength.
6. Protein – A major building block for all animals. A structural component essential for skin integrity.
Autism is a complicated illness which seems to be affecting a number of children nowadays. While there is no known cure for autism, parents who struggle to raise autistic child or children are finding ways to manage and cope with their situation.
As a parent, one of the hardest sentences to hear is “your child is autistic”. It would be unrealistic to say that this is the end of the world but for some parents it can be as close as it gets. First of all, it would be good to note that autism has no known cause. Studies have shown that children who are autistic seem to a genetic disposition to autism; however this does not mean that genetics is the cause of the illness. Whether predisposition to autism is genetic or not, there are triggers which can precipitate the disorder. These can be complications during birth or pregnancy, viral infections, chemicals and pollutants in the environment and even allergies.
One of the hardest part about autism is that no two children with autism are alike and which makes it hard to see symptoms and give diagnoses to children who are autistic. For parents all of these can be confusing. There are doctors who recommend therapy, rehab, medicines and other methods. With all of this confusion, there are parents out there who are finding ways of coping with the disorder and are looking for native or natural remedies for autism.
While there are no known cures for autism, professionals agree that the earlier the treatment begins, the better the chance the child has to lead a normal life. Treatments include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, sensory integration, society integration, behavior modification and speech therapy. Of course not all children will need these treatments because symptoms and degree of severity differs from child to child.
Other natural or native remedies for autism include the diet. Nutritionists suggest that food supplements and vitamins be included in the diet. Supplements and vitamins help the brain develop and compensate for whatever vitamin or mineral the child lacks in a normal meal. And since autism affects the brain, it would follow that a proper and balanced diet together with some supplements can help with autism. There are also a number of studies which suggest that the use of vitamins and minerals in the treatment of autism have had significant effects on the children who took part in the trials. There are also suggestions that autistic symptoms can be caused as a result of mal absorption and intolerances to certain foodstuffs, especially dairy products and gluten contained in wheat and grain products. Some parents have reported remarkable changes after the elimination of these foodstuffs from the diets of their autistic children.

The Causes of Acne
Acne is a condition of chronic inflammation to the skin’s pores, acne is possibly the most familiar of all skin conditions. Through puberty, regularly between ages of 11 and 14, more than 85 per cent of teenagers develop it. Acne can return in adulafteradulthood. In teenagers, scars from acne will be most customary in boys than girls. In adults, persistence acne is most regular in women than in men.
Regardless of what people do to deal with it, acne outbreaks typically clear over the time span of a few months to a year. The scarring and disfigurement acne causes, however, can inflict lasting impairment to self-image and self-esteem.
Acne originates in the sebum. Sedbum is the skin’s natural lubricating oil, and it makes the skin soft. It lubricates the pores around the hair, aluptightt to move. Sebum furthermore minimizes wrinkles, and helps the skin to function something like a waterproof, keeping damp out of the tissues.
Stress can cause tension, and that can block skin pores. Usually in teenagers, acne is connected with the productionof testosterone. Testosterone is found in both males and females, and it is produced in its maximum amounts throughout the teenage years. Testosterone stimulates the growth of a tough layer of keratin to guard the skin, at times locking sebum and the inflammatory chemicals they manufacture inside pores.
If you are unfortunate enough to get cold sores, you are not alone; many thousands of people suffer from them and are constantly searching for a cold sore treatment so that they can get relief from the pain and discomfort they cause.
They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) which, when one is infected, hides deep in the nerve roots until it is triggered by stress, colds and flu, anxiety a lack of sleep or even exposure to the sun. The body’s immune system normally has great difficulty in dealing with the virus which is why they often reoccur.
The actual sores are the result of the reproductive process of the herpes simplex virus, which having entered a healthy cell, causes that cell to replicate the virus. The virus then destroys the host, releasing millions of cells in a confined area, which produces what is commonly called the cold sore.
Awareness of the early symptoms means that one can treat them quickly. Some symptoms to look out for are:
- A burning or tingling sensation underneath the skin, called the prodrome. More often than not experienced from just a few hours to a few days prior to the appearance of the blisters.
- The area of the lips, mouth or nose may become reddened and develop small fluid filled blisters. Sometimes small blisters may come together to form a larger blister.
When they reoccur, the blisters dry up more quickly but leave scabs, that typically last from a day to several days. Medical advice should be sought to treat cold sores early to avoid any complications, when people have a weak immune system.
